Wow. I can’t thank you all enough for the love on last week’s nursery plans and special surprise!
I feel so lucky to be able to give this sweet baby a beautiful room to come home to and to have the love and support of our family and friends and sponsors (and you all! ) along the way. Week 2 tends to not be nearly as exciting as announcing our plans for the space but hey, you can’t get to reveal week without all the stuff in between!
Here’s a reminder of the mood boards for the space (in no particular order):
And here’s our to do list:
- remove the carpet
- replace the floor
- install and widen new window
- remove the old trim
- replace with new craftsman style trip
- install a wood feature wall
- replace lighting
- install craftsman wood trim to closet doors
- paint
- install custom shelving
- re-paint and re-purpose dresser
- install allllll the special surprises that make this room a girl or boy nursery!
Since the new window was installed a few weeks ago the next step was to remove all the trim and carpet!
Since this is a mid-century house we pretty much figured we wouldn’t find some beautiful hardwood floors hidden beneath the carpet – and low and behold …. a regular ‘ol subfloor.
After Mr. Wright took all the carpet out – and hundreds of staples – he removed all the floor and door trim. Easy Peasy.
Now comes time for the floor…..
There may have been a bit or drama surrounding the floor thanks to some leftover floor they had being discontinued but after some savvy searching we found a NEW floor that turned out beautifully! Due to cost, durability, and easy installation we went with vinyl plank flooring. Molly and Alex have this in their kitchen and it’s incredibly resilient! We also like how soft and quiet the floor is compared to laminate. In a nursery especially, removing potential allergen traps is super important so the carpet needed to go.
We chose this vinyl plank floor from Lowe’s for $2/sq ft. The floor already comes with padding attached and there’s no need to add a water barrier since this is a sub-floor.
The boys literally installed an ENTIRE FLOOR in a matter of hours only using a straight edge, carpenters T, and utility knife. No saws. No dust. AMAZING.
(Pardon my crappy iPhone photo’s – didn’t have the good camera with me!) Once they determined where they wanted the seams to line up it was smooth sailing from there.
While they were busy laying the floor, Molly and I were working on a fun little project that’s she’s wanted long before she was pregnant. She found this cute little alphabet grouping with decoupaged patterned papers on pinterest ages ago and knew someday that would be in her nursery. Since this is the nursery of her dreams of course we had to make it happen!
I’ll have a full tutorial on this project but for now we are just starting by painting big cardboard letters from a craft store. Seeing them all layed out made me a bit terrified at how much space on the wall this was going to occupy! By the time the paint was dry the boys were done with floor! I can’t stress enough how easy that was – or maybe those big strong men just made it look easy haha
The bad blogger in me didn’t get a picture of the floor when it was complete because it was dark but we have the kitty stamp of approval.
Up next is working on allllll that trim and the feature wall! But for now we can cross these off the list!
