HI!
Welcome to week 5 of this surprise gender reveal nursery!!! With the in-person reveal only 3 DAYS AWAY things are literally down to the wire. Mr. Wright and I’ve been working all.the.days in our real jobs so we haven’t had as much time to get everything ready as we’d like. We somehow always manage to pull it off and this will be no exception!
Here’s how the room is looking now:
A) We have a lot of work to do still and B) I’m LOVING it! C) Boy is this room tough to photograph!
Let’s check in with the to-do list and see where things are.
remove the carpetreplace the floorinstall and widen new windowremove the old trimreplace with new craftsman style triminstall a wood feature wallpaint- install craftsman wood trim to closet doors
- replace lighting
- install custom shelving
- re-paint and re-purpose dresser
- install allllll the special surprises that make this room a girl or boy nursery!
Well I have a few more things I can check off! The crazy part about this surprise reveal is that I have SO MANY THINGS for this nursery that I can’t share with you all yet! I thought about uploading some black and white pictures but than I worried somehow someone would figure something out with that so than I decided I can’t show any pictures. So, the dresser has been painted (gender specific) and it’s ready to head back to the nursery and have it’s fancy new hardware installed from D. Lawless Hardware – one of our amazing sponsors!
I used Annie Sloan chalk paint for the first time and I’m very impressed with the coverage. I decided not to wax it yet because I kind of like the matte look but we’ll see how it holds up for them and we can always do that at a later time. It’s been done for about a week now so plenty of time to cure! Here’s what it looked like from the Craigslist Ad:
Nothing some paint and new hardware can’t fix! We both loved the simplicity of it and it was in great shape. So, check that off the list!!
Alright now the lighting – remember we left off with the spider web of wires? (You can see in first picture). Well the electrician is coming on Friday to fix that hot mess so that the nursery is safe and we have a pretty new light!
The other big project has been the wood trim on the closet doors. Mr. Wright has been working on this when he can but it’s taking a bit longer than expected because…life.
Here’s how the closet doors look day one:
And here’s Molly’s inspiration for the new craftsman trim:
No sweat right? It’s going to fit in so nice in this space and I’m really excited to see these doors come together!
Another task on the list was to make and install custom shelves for the space. I knew I wanted to do something special – not just a regular piece of stained pine. Luckily here in Grand Rapids we have an amazing wood craft store that carries unique species of live edge and cut wood. I went in to scope things out and saw a sale on walnut for $6 a board foot.
So a cute old man helped me sift through a pile of it to find two 97″ long boards about 8ft. wide. I wanted 4 even shelves to fit the 48″ wide space and these two boards gave me plenty! Grand total was about $75 thanks to the sale which for 4 shelves I don’t think that’s bad! Plus, its beautiful!
Since Mr. Wright and I are running out of time we asked Molly’s stepdad (a fantastic and uber talented man) to help and he happily obliged. He took the boards to his workshop and got them cut and ready to fit into our brackets in no time. He even suggested instead of using poly to seal them I coat them in tung oil. I got one coat in and it is gorgeous – I’m so happy with the suggestion!!!
Here they are cut (pre-oiled). I just love the color and grain of the wood! We are spraying the brackets a light champagne color and I’m so excited to see it come together. Plus there will be little baby things decorating these shelves – how cute is that.

And how about one more look at this gorgeous wall and the wall that got painted a hysterically similar hue.
I have so many wonderful things to share with you from my sponsors that I can’t hardly wait. They have been amazingly patient knowing their final product would have to make it’s appearance week 6 and I’m so grateful for them. I promise it will be worth the wait!!!
